It was a busy weekend at SHYC, what with two dinners, a dance, a breakfast and a regatta. Thanks to all who came out and all – young and old – who participated in the racing.
Many thanks to SHYC member, (Chef) Rob Anderson and all who assisted in the kitchen (Saturday and then again, Sunday Morning), and to “The Lawyers” for rockin’ and rollin’ us into the night. This group of musicians has been coming to the club for years (origin story another time) and, rather than be compensated, they ask only that we provide a week at the Sailing Academy summer program to several youngsters who couldn’t otherwise afford it. Just another example of the greater SHYC community generously giving of their time and expertise.
Speaking of time and expertise, special thanks go to SHYC Member, Barb Turney, who designed and hand-crafted the way cool zippered, water resistant shoulder bags that served as top prizes for this year’s event. While they contain too many great features to list, the most important detail is that to make them, Barb upcycled old Albacore sails which once sailed this very harbour. A real labour of love and skill. Thanks, Barb!
We want to thank again the group of water-based volunteers who made this year’s ECAC possible. Whether on the committee boat (m/v Jennie Rose, supplied by SHYC member, Ben Taylor and helmed by son, Elliott Taylor), or the smaller mark boats, two and a half long days on the water can be physically and mentally demanding and represents a generous “give” to the organization. Led by your Rear Commodore, Bradd Wilson, this team is honing its skills as the core of a go-to group for future major regattas, including next year when SHYC hosts the Laser Masters Atlantic Coast Division championship. It’s part of our multi-year regattas initiative designed to build on the success of the 2019 International Albacore Championship and to rightfully cement the Town of Shelburne and Shelburne Harbour as a world-class destination for sailing and sailing competitions. Stay tuned for more news on that front. Thank you, Race Committee, one and all!
